naw

Montreal ex-pat naw (Neil Wiernik) who currently calls Toronto his home, began composing electronic music in 1988 with explorations in audio art and experimental music. Neil’s interest in sound and technology has lead him to a continued questioning and refinement of audio tools and modes of production resulting in experimentation with altered instruments, modified devices, and custom software environments. Neil’s music could be described as warm, atmospheric, and cinematic electronic music. The sound design of naw is firmly grounded in the rich traditions of dub studio culture but can also be weighed alongside formal contemporary composition and present day electronic music forms. His music was described in The Wire as having “…the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the murk and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays.” Neil has released music on various labels as naw, Neil Wiernik and other alisas/projects including such labels as: noise factory records, paper+sound, pertin_nce, elevation recordings, BLRr and FeedBackLoop.

heiki

Varying from experimental-ambient, techno, down tempo and electronic dub, Heiki Sillaste has released an impressive catalogue of well over 45 synthesizer-based records and made over 150 compilation appearances, since 1987.
Heiki began his musical career fronting the internationally acclaimed industrial-tekno group DIGITAL POODLE in the late 80’s and early 90’s and ran the now famous Shadow Canada label.
In 1995, Heiki went on to co-found nice+smooth ultramedia, an independent electronic music label that has produced great records by fellow musicians such as Roy Davis Jr., Jordan Fields and Teknostep, as well as Heiki’s own groups KINDER ATOM, LAZER CAPS and LES FONTAINES.
Heiki’s collaborative and remix work has been wide reaching, including work with the likes of Solvent, Dead Voices on Air, Technostep, Visionary, Snow, Leahy, seminal ambient composers Rapoon and Zoviet France, and reggae superstars Michael Rose and Musical Sniper.

The North Shore
Live as part of
The New Harbours Music Series
Friday, May 10, 2013
252 James North, Hamilton, Ontario
8 pm
Performing with OUREBOROS

The final New Harbours concert of the spring season features an audio-visual performance of ambient electronics from DREAMSTATE and HEIKI SILLASTE,
with an opening set from Hamilton drone worshippers OUREBOROS.

Recorded in January 2012 by ambient duo dreamSTATE with electronic sound-artist Heiki Sillaste, “The North Shore” sonically evokes the Canadian winters of their lifetimes -travels through white fields and deep woods, along frozen rivers and by the shorelines of great lakes. The CD package is a numbered limited-edition of 250 copies in digipak with glass mastered audio CDand four signed art cards.

Founded in 1995, DreamSTATE (Scott M2 & Jamie Todd) is a Canadian ambient music project known for their soundscape installations and live ambient performances in the Toronto area. Their soundscapes combine electronic music processes with field recordings and range from light to dark ambient. Scott and Jamie curate the long-running Ambient Ping concert series in Toronto.

Heiki Sillaste is a veteran of the Toronto electronic music scene and was a founding member of groups such as Digital Poodle, Kinder Atom and Lazer Caps. Since 1987, Heiki Sillaste has released an impressive catalogue of well over 45 synthesizer-based records and made over 150 compilation appearances. Heiki currently owns and operates the paper+sound electronic music label.

Oureboros is Rich Oddie and Aron West, two Hamilton area musicians who have been making experimental and electronic music for the last twenty years. Oureboros is a new collaboration that focuses on improvisation, combining elements of electro-acoustic music, shoegaze and black metal. Their debut album, Dreaming in Earth, Dissolving in Light, was released on Ant Zen in 2011.

CHROMOSPHERE is the solo project of Kris Helstrom,
an alumnus of Digital Poodle and Kinder Atom.
Chromosphere is very little without collaborations.
Past and present contributors such as:
Heiki Sillaste, Gerald Belanger, Chris Drost, Bill Mason, Roland Last, Andreas Gregor, Nate Leinert,
and perhaps furthest from least, Anne Sulikowski, have during their time, each given something
uniqueto “the cause” that has made the process of Chromosphere more then worthwhile.
The product of Chromosphere is all too varied to start mentioning genre with any authority,
so it is sufficient to say that it is Chromosphere’s mandate to encompass any and all musical ideas
of interest; none exclusivelyelectronic, nor exclusively sequenced, nor concerned necessarily with
popular appeal. Often set to beats;dance, down-tempo or otherwise, and sometimes just a drone
sans any rhythm save perhaps a pulse toassure the listener thatit is indeed alive. Exploration seems
to still best describe what it is that occurs within this particular Chromosphere.

Heiki Live
Live at Ping
Heiki will be performing tracks from his latest release Sauna Porch Recordings Co.,
a collection of new music entirely composed and recorded on the porch of the rustic sauna cabin
his father designed and built in Georgian Bay over 35 years ago.

Heiki made these recordings by creating a live, chilled soundtrack first, then sitting back and
absorbing the Georgian Bay lake view and natural surroundings for inspiration. Occasionally he
would set up a microphone, record, and then process the natural sounds of the surroundings –
the wind, the birds, the rustling of leaves in the wind, people swimming, or motorboats and canoes
passing by.

Most of the initial music was quickly recorded as loops in the morning then slowly built up over the
course of a day. Songs were then revisited, treated, layered and re-built over the course of a few
weeks (or years, in some cases). Washes of sound were created by processing the field recordings
then layering them with synthesizer tones and sequences, creating a fusion of natural and
synthesized resonances.
Sauna Porch Recordings Co. is released in download format and a strictly limited
250 copy digipack edition.
